Foot Problems Increasing Due to Covid Habits

We’ve all had our lives interrupted by Covid. Some of these changes have been severe and have required major changes in our lives. Unfortunately, many of these changes have harmed our health and even caused foot problems.

Orthopedic surgeon Kshitij Manchanda, M.D. at UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, reported that he had seen an increase not only in injuries but chronic problems as well.

“With the pandemic shutdowns, people had to adapt their daily routines. Many began running outdoors or purchased exercise equipment to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” explained Dr. Manchanda, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. “We saw an estimated 25-30% uptick in injuries as people were learning to navigate their equipment or outdoor terrain.”

So, what can you do? Here are a few simple things you can do to minimize the risks of a foot injury.

First, don’t skip your warm-up before attempting any strenuous activity. You don’t have to spend much time doing it, but make sure the warm-up includes stretches.

Choose the right footwear. Different sports require several types of footwear. In general, make sure to choose footwear that provides support in both the front of the shoe and under the arch. Make sure the heel and the back of the shoe are stable. If you play many different sports, Cross training shoes are an overall good choice; however, it is best to use shoes designed for the sport.

Finally, you want to ease into new exercise programs. Try slow increases in physical activity to allow your body to adjust to the new physical demands. Too fast can cause significant strain and stress on your feet and ankles leading to problems.
