28 Jul Watch Out for These Summer Foot Injuries

With the warm weather here, people are beginning to get outdoors again. Hiking, going to the beach, hitting the pool, and many other activities are all popular this time of year. However, summer injuries are all too common. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your feet happy and healthy this season.

COMMON FOOT INJURIES

Injuries can happen anytime and anywhere. Some of the most common foot and ankle injuries are:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Blisters
  • Heel pain
  • Tendon injury
  • Fractures
  • Broken bones

HOW TO PREVENT INJURIES

Luckily there are some simple things you can do to prevent severe foot and ankle injuries. To protect your feet, and ankles follow these tips:

  • Avoid going barefoot. It’s a wonderful feeling to walk on a sandy beach or feel the grass on your feet, but it can be hazardous. Even minor cuts can lead to serious infections.
  • Avoid flip-flops. They might be convenient, but flip-flops do not provide the proper support your ankles and feet need. It can also affect your knees, legs, and back. Sandals can lead to fractures and heel pain. If you plan to do a lot of walking, try finding a good pair of hiking boots.
  • Avoid flat shoes. It is especially important if you plan to do a lot of hiking. Your heel can receive a great deal of stress from the constant pounding with each step. It can cause cracked skin, heel pain, or even stress fractures. An experienced podiatrist can offer custom orthotics, which are shoe inserts specially designed to the shape of your foot that provides cushioning and support exactly where it’s needed most.

Finally, if you experience any foot discomfort, the most important thing is not to wait. Find an experienced specialist right away to prevent any problems from getting worse.
