23 Mar Properly Treat Ankle Sprains to Prevent Chronic Instability

A previous ankle sprain not correctly treated is more susceptible to reinjury and may lead to chronic ankle instability. Even a seemingly minor sprain may be serious and require evaluation and treatment with your foot doctor.

Your podiatrist will do a physical exam of the foot and ankle to check for any broken bones, the tendon pulls, and other tissue damage. Imaging studies such as x-ray or MRI will be used to confirm breaks, hairline fractures, and soft tissue damage.

Proper treatment of ankle sprains includes the following:

  • Use the RICE protocol—This treatment protocol consists of Rest, Icing, Compression, and Elevation and is essential for preventing further damage and proper evaluation of the injury.
  • Pain management—Acetaminophen or ibuprofen is taken in moderation to help reduce pain and swelling.
  • An immobilizing boot may be necessary—A rigid boot that immobilizes the ankle joint is a great help to allow proper healing to proceed while also enabling ambulation.
  • Physical therapy exercises—Following a regimen of various physical therapy exercises for the feet and ankles is essential for restoring strength, flexibility, stability, good range of motion.

For ankle sprains, be sure to see your foot doctor for proper treatment and avoid future complications.
