Prevent Winter Injuries with These Tips

25 Jan Prevent Winter Injuries with These Tips

Now that the colder temperatures are here, people are bundling up and getting outside to enjoy all the winter sports and activities they love. It’s fun and great exercise; however, it can also put a lot of stress on your feet. Here are some quick tips to make sure you avoid any unnecessary winter injuries.

Try Stretching. Ankle sprains and injuries are common in winter. These occur when the ligaments around your bones are stressed excessively. You can help prevent this by stretching regularly. Making sure your feet and ankles are limber will reduce the likelihood of injury. Simply stretching your toes, rotating your ankle, and keeping your feet mobile before any strenuous activity can help.

Don’t overdo it! Many people will start the season by spending hours ice-skating or skiing and simply ignore any pain they feel. However, it’s important to listen to your body. The moment you feel any discomfort or pain, you should pause for a rest. If the pain persists, it’s important not to let it go, as this may lead to further complications. Contact an experienced podiatrist right away.

Bundle up! Frostbite can occur any time the temperature gets to near freezing. Prolonged exposure of skin to freezing temperatures may lead to permanent damage. It’s best to minimize your exposure to the cold. Thermal socks are a good idea. Make sure they are wool and use two pairs if necessary.

Find a good fit. Ankle and foot sprains happen all the time. One cause is poor-fitting footwear. Make sure your shoes or boots are snug with proper support. Find footwear with thick rubber soles that can grip the ground to prevent falling.
