27 Oct Foot Tips for Raynaud’s Awareness Month

October is Raynaud’s Awareness Month. Since the cold weather is coming, naturally, your extremities may begin to feel chilly. However, it may be more than the cold, you could be suffering from Raynaud’s syndrome. This is the time to take a look at Raynaud’s syndrome, how it affects your foot health, and what you can do about it.

WHAT IS RAYNAUD’S?

Raynaud’s is a condition that causes the blood vessels to tighten. This can limit the blood flow to your extremities. Often it can be brought on by emotional or physical stress. When the blood vessels contract, your feet can become numb, cold, and painful. The skin may even change colors to red, blue, or white. You may experience pins and needles and the blood vessels begin to open again. Raynaud’s syndrome usually does not cause permanent damage, however, for some, the compromised circulation can prevent some wounds from healing. It’s important to consult an experienced podiatrist to learn more.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Raynaud’s is usually not disabling, but it can be uncomfortable. There are some ways you can manage and decrease the risk of Raynaud attacks. These include:

  • Dress in layers when the weather is cold.
  • Wear heavy wool socks, two layers if possible.
  • Avoid smoking as it can impede circulation by constricting the blood vessels.
  • Exercise regularly to improve circulation.
  • Gently massage your feet to return feeling in them.
  • Run warm water over your feet to gradually warm them back up.

Of course, if you are experiencing any problems or discomfort, it’s best to contact an experienced specialist.
