24 May Don’t Let Foot Fungus Ruin Your Fun
The warm weather is back, and people are beginning to enjoy the fresh air. It’s a lot of fun, but the outdoors and sun can also mean a lot of sweating. Sweaty feet are the perfect environment for foot fungus to take hold.
Here’s what you need to know to make sure foot fungus doesn’t ruin your summer fun.
What is Foot Fungus?
Athlete’s foot, also known as tenia pedis, does not only affect athletes but anyone who has sweaty feet. This fungus loves to live in warm, moist areas, especially between your toes. Although the fungus is contagious, it is very treatable.
Signs of Athlete’s Foot
- Stinging, itchy, or burning feeling between toes and at times on the soles of your feet.
- Blisters
- Cracking or peeling of the skin.
- Swelling
- Dry skin between your toes and the sides or soles of your feet.
Ways to Prevent Athlete’s Foot
- Change socks (cotton) regularly.
- Wear slippers or flip-flops in public areas.
- Do not share shoes.
- Let your feet breathe.
- Keep bathroom surfaces clean, and do not share towels to avoid spreading to other family members.
- Air your shoes out and alternate footwear.
- Wash and dry feet daily.
- Wear breathable shoes.
- Wash socks, bedding, and towels in water that’s 140 degrees F or higher.
- Disinfect shoes with Clorox wipes.
Treatment for Athlete’s Foot
It’s always a good idea to consult a qualified podiatrist first to confirm your foot symptoms, especially diabetic patients. Here are some home remedies that can help get rid of your athlete’s foot.
- Over-the-counter antifungal powders or sprays.
- Certain foot soaks can help, such as tea tree oil, cider vinegar, or baking soda, but always check with your doctor first.
- Doctor prescribed medications.
If the problem persists or is left untreated, athlete’s foot can affect your toenails as well, so it is best to call a podiatrist. In addition to any fungal problems, if you have pain in your foot or heel, issues with your ankle, an injury, ingrown toenails, or any other issues with your feet, our experienced team of podiatrists are here to help!
